Missouri TBF Tournament Series
Presented by
Jones Wins Day 1 Scanlon Drops a 7.35 lb Toad on the Scales for Day 1 Big Bass Two More Days at Truman Decide Top 4 Going to 2008 Central Divisional Day 1 Day 2 Written by Matt Eisenbacher, Missouri TBF Conservation Director The Missouri TBF Bass Federation held its first Tournament Series qualifying event at Table Rock Lake on March 24th and 25th out of Ahoy’s in Kimberling City. Near record high temperatures had the water temperature climbing and fish moving up quickly in a pre-spawn mode. With the majority of the lake water temperature in the upper 40’s to low 50’s, a strong jerkbait bite was found but the standard Wiggle Wart shined as well. Table Rock wasn’t generous to all anglers but she did kick out several quality fish and a few good bags as well. This tournament was really two events in one. Each day was a stand-alone event with points, club placing and prize money given out for each day. A second event will be held at Truman Lake on June 23rd and 24th with additional points awarded for the final two event days. The top 4 point holders after all four days of competition will be invited to the 2008 TBF Central Division Championship. The final 8 Divisional anglers will qualify through the November 2007 Missouri State Championship. Additionally, nearly $4,000 in cash and prizes was paid back to 44 anglers at one of the best smallmouth lakes in Missouri. The tournament was title sponsored by Three Rivers One Outdoors (www.threeriversone.com) on Day 1 and Eiron Breaker Lure Company (www.eironjig.com) on Day 2. Each company provided a tackle pack for every angler plus additional tournament packs and certificates as draw prizes. The event was also locally supported by Kimberling Inn (free rooms and special rates), Table Rock Tackle and Marine (tournament lure packages), Center City Marine (Yamalube oil) and Orscheln Farm and Home (gift cards). The Missouri National Guard also provided two awnings for the tournament. These organizations made this event a success and the Missouri TBF would like to deeply thank them for their support. The Missouri TBF Bass Federation is sponsored by Pro’s Choice Marine, Ranger Boats, Yamaha, Evinrude, Castrol, Lowrance, Wal Mart, National Guard, Solar Bat, Chevy, FLW Outdoors and BassFan.
Day 1-1st Place – Matt Jones, Christian County Bassmasters Matt took a long ride up the James River to the muddy water that just cleared enough to fish to sack the best limit of the weekend. He worked a ½ oz black/blue War Eagle jig with a sapphire blue Zoom super chunk trailer 1-3 feet deep on chunk rock banks in creek arms. The fish were holding around the large rocks and also under washed in debris from the recent rain. The area was also loaded with baitfish. His 15.97 lb bag was anchored by the 3rd Big Bass of the day, a solid 5.59 lb kicker. Matt also placed well on Day 2 (5th) and again had 3rd Big Bass, bringing his payout for the weekend to a solid $550. Matt is sponsored by G Loomis rods, Angler’s Tackle Box and War Eagle Custom Baits.
Day 2-1st Place, Day 2-BB, Day 1-2nd Place – David Sommerkamp, Team Concepts David had the most consistent weekend of all the anglers by holding down the runner-up position on Day 1 with a 13.35 lb limit and winning Day 2 with 10.76 lbs on the shoulders of three fish. One of those fish on Day 2 was the Big Bass winner at 5.25 lbs. David ran down to the mouth of Long Creek and fished a 3/8 oz brown roundhead jig tipped with a green pumpkin Zoom critter craw early on rock ledges out to 20 feet of water. This produced four keepers on Day 1 and his big bite on Day 2. Once the wind kicked in, he ran windy, timbered main lake points with a clown Super Rogue jerkbait. David’s payout for the weekend topped out at $660 and he thanked his wife for her support.
Day 2-2nd Place – Don Heiser, Team Concepts Don hit main lake points with hardwood from Kimberling City to the Dam to rack up 9.97 lbs on quality spotted bass to take 2nd Place on Day 2. His bait of choice was a black/chrome/orange Rogue over 15 feet of water. Don changed to this pattern after an unsuccessful first hour in the morning and immediately put a fish in the livewell. He only had five bites but put four of them in the livewell for a payday of $125. Don is sponsored by Orscheln Farm and Home, Ranger Boats, and OIX Inc.
Day 1-3rd Place – Gary Hern, St. Louis Bassbusters Gary hit the mid-lake area to bag a 12.64 lb sack anchored by a solid 5.10 lb largemouth. He targeted secondary points mid-way back in coves with large slab rock mixed in with gravel and coaxed strikes in 6-10 feet of water. Gary used a variety of jerkbaits but the key to his bite was the present of the big boulders and wind blowing onto the points. Gary thanked his supporting wife and took home a check for $125.
Day 2-3rd Place, Day 1-Big Bass – Casey Scanlon, Pro’s Choice Casey was able to boat the biggest fish of the weekend on Day 1, a 7.35 lb toad. The fish came out of Big Indian creek from a brush pile planted on a transition bank with a purple/chartreuse Rogue at 9 am. He placed well on Day 2 by hitting windy main lake points with the same jerkbait for a total of 8.17 lbs. The points were laden with cedar trees and Casey lamented over several lost fish which didn’t get hooked up. He is sponsored by Precision Lawn and Landscape of Kansas City and took home $325 for the weekend. A total on 115 fish were weighed over the weekend for a total of 305.31 lbs, all of which was released alive. Day 1 1st Matt Jones
